You Are Not Alone
According to a recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of every two American adults over the age of 30 has periodontal disease. That is 50 percent! If you are suffering with the effects of gum disease, it is important to know that you are not alone and that you can stop its progression before you lose your teeth and bone.
50 Percent of adults over the age of thirty have gum disease.
Nine percent of adults thirty years of age or older have severe periodontitis.
OVER FIVE MILLION DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE PLACED EACH YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES.
Gum Disease Happens In Several Stages
Gum disease does not happen overnight. The typical stages of gum disease include gingivitis, early periodontitis and advanced periodontitis.

Gingivitis Stage
During this stage, the gums are under attack from plaque. This makes them tender, swollen or painful. The gums will likely bleed when you eat or brush your teeth. If you see a dentist at this stage, you may be able to halt your gum disease.

Early Periodontitis Stage
By the time periodontitis has advanced, you are at risk of losing bone density as well as teeth. However, with intervention, it is often possible to remedy the situation. You will still have to control your gum disease through regular appointments with Dr. Amy Gentner and her team, but you can finally rid yourself of the signs and symptoms of the problem.

Advanced Periodontitis Stages
During this stage, the gums are under attack from plaque. This makes them tender, swollen or painful. The gums will likely bleed when you eat or brush your teeth. If you see a dentist at this stage, you may be able to halt your gum disease.
Periodontal Treatments and Dentures in St. Johns, MI
Dr. Gentner’s attention to detail makes her an ideal dentist to treat your gum disease. Gum disease has been linked to other serious health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer. It is important that you seek treatment immediately to control the infection and restore your overall health.
Dr. Gentner provides competent periodontal diagnosis and treatment including:
Periodontal Maintenence
Periodontal maintenance is a routine hygiene therapy to maintain the tissue after periodontal treatment, as bacteria will remain in your mouth. We remove bacteria and infection above and below your gum line to keep your gums healthy and to prevent further damage. Periodontal pockets are monitored and sometimes antibiotics or laser treatment is administered.
Gum Therapy (Scaling and Root Planing)
This is a special treatment that removes bacteria and calculus from areas that are impossible to reach at home. Control periodontal pockets and stop gum disease in its tracks with this procedure, which is most effective when gum disease is caught early.
Gingevectomy
A gingivectomy removes and reshapes excess gum tissue to reduce the depths of periodontal pockets that breed bacteria and destroy your soft tissue.
Dentures
If it is too late and you have lost too many teeth to disease, do not worry. You will be able to speak and eat normally again. Dr. Gentner will give you a new and functional smile with dentures.
Laser Therapy
We utilize advanced laser therapy to provide a virtually painless treatment of gum disease. Our gentle laser destroys bacteria and promotes healthy tissue growth without the need of scalpels, sutures or anesthetic.
